With a name like Smitten, there’s no doubt we’re in love with the idea of love. We’ve gone all out this Valentine’s Day and created not one, but two special cakes, to celebrate this most tender of occasions.

Fall in love with every bite starting Friday, 27 January. Hugs (whole rolls of approximately 450g) retail for $40 nett each.
We’re also offering Enchanted Love, a mini Croquembouche that tastes even more sublime than it looks – a crunchy Royaltine base sits upon a rich brownie base, topped with 4 light choux puffs filled with a tangy sweet passionfruit mousse. Enchanted Love is on sale from 27 Jan to 14 February only, and only 10 cakes are available daily. Enchanted Love is priced at $30 nett. Wishing one and all a very prosperous and happy Year of the Dragon. Gong Xi Fa Cai!
If, like me, you grew up a couple (ahem, maybe more like 3 or 4) of decades ago in a Singapore that was still verty much traditionally Asian, you’d remember a time when Christmas was not a big deal. Sure, some of us had little plastic trees with a few flastic baubles; maybe exchanged presents with our closer friends; perhaps a nice dinner with family on the Eve.
But in today’s decidedly more cosmopolitan environment, I think you’d be hard put to find anyone who deosn’t succumb every December to the allure of the bright lights and delicious smells of Christmas. Live trees, foam snow, the Orchard Road light up, hams and turkeys the size of which has our Asian eyes and palates all agog, log cakes of all permutations and colours and even shapes (I am still reconciling myself to the idea that a log cake may not be in the shape of a log!)…Christmas in Singapore sure has taken a whole different dimension.
While it may all seem terribly commercialized, and sometimes even crass, I still love it all. I recently attended a very early Christmas gift exchange (for the kids) and potluck(for the adults) for a group of friends I’ve known for a very long time.
With close to 10 families in attendance, it was loud, chaotic and crazy. And absolutely fantastic. Our kids are blessed, there’s no double about that, so to see them still able to get that excited over sharing and exchanging gifts tells me there’s still something very special about the holiday. I believe it is up to us to find these special moments in a holiday that can be overwhelming and even stressful.
As the year draws to a close, some of us tend to get rather reflective, and Christmas is a great time to appreciate the joy and uniqueness each of our family and friends brings into our lives.
No matter how you celebrate Christmas, we at The Patissier, Petite Patisserie, and Smitten…by The Patissier wish you all the love, friendship, peace, and joy of the season. Merry Christmas.
In celebration of the season, Petite Patisserie’s next Decor Bar will be dedicated to Santa and all things Christmas.
Our chefs will be on hand to help you decorate your Petite Patisserie cake, which comes in three delicious flavours – Chocolate Dream, Strawberry Delight and Mango Madness.
All you need is an unabashed love for the portly man in red and white, an unleashed imagination, and we’ll provide everything you need (an undecorated Petite Patisserie cake of your choice, a full spread of ingredients to decorate the cake; and professional bakers on standby to help you).
Petite Patisserie’s Christmas Decor Bar will be held on Saturday, 17 December at The Patissier’s Kitchen at 18 Ann Siang Rd, #01-01.

Drum roll and drawing of curtains please; we’re finally ready to unveil our latest baby. We’re so excited to reveal… Smitten…by The Patissier.
Come Wednesday, 28 September, we will open our very first counter outlet. Located in Takashimaya Department Store Food Hall on B2, the counter will offer something quite unique – a culinary tribute and dedication to just one product! We’re going to offer a range of meringue roulades – one product, but oh the myriad taste sensations; you have to taste it to believe it – featuring our signature meringue sponge (yes, of Passionfruit Meringue fame).
How did we come up with the idea? A random musing by our executive chef, Siang Yee, basically started it all. As some of you know, she created the Passionfruit Meringue (which is now one of our best sellers at The Patissier) but she’s always believed that the texture of the meringue sponge was best suited to be savoured in its intended form, the roll. We only changed it to its current cake form because of requests from our customers for something more traditional for birthdays and other celebrations.
When inspiration strikes Siang Yee, it strikes hard. After weeks of experimenting with flavours and combinations, and achieving delicious success, we just couldn’t let the idea go. A smaller retail space to specialise just in meringue roulades! When the opportunity to take up a counter at Taka came along, eureka!, we took it as a sign.
When it came to naming the outlet, we toyed with several names but in the end, one really stood out for us. Enraptured, absorbed, captivated, mesmerised, consumed… we were definitely smitten! And being able to call our whole rolls Hugs and slices Kisses to tie in with the name just sealed the deal.
This was a very special project for us, and we knew it would appeal most to a similarly special customer segment. As you can see, in designing the counter space, our packaging, and logo, we wanted to reflect the fun-loving, slightly irreverent, even cheeky nature of our target market.
Smitten…by The Patissier has been a real labour of love for us. It’s been hard, but we loved every single minute of planning, experimenting, tasting, designing, creating. We hope you enjoy it as much as we’ve loved bringing it to you.
I love full moons… and especially the full moon on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, which is the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival. This year, Mid-Autumn Festival, also commonly known as Mooncake Festival or Lantern Festival), falls on 12 September and I’m looking forward to some moon viewing that evening.
The moon just seems bigger and brighter on Mid-Autumn Festival – huge and brilliant and so beautiful*. Of course, I’m particularly partial to this festival. I love the tradition behind it and I find it a very charming, pretty festival with the colourful lanterns and gorgeous mooncakes (yums!). And what’s there not to love about a festival that gives you reason to gather with friends and family and feast.
Of course, most of us know the stories behind the Mid-Autumn Festival – the immortal maiden Chang’e and the hare who lives on the moon; the Chinese rebellion against the Mongol rulers during the Yuan dynasty aided by messages hidden within mooncakes – that give the festival so much flavour. While these are mainly folklore, what is known is that it originated over 3,000 years ago as moon worship during the Shang dynasty and evolved to become a harvest festival.
I’d always thought that it was observed only in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan (where they get a public holiday for the festival!!) and Singapore and Malaysia. But it’s actually also celebrated in the Philippines, Vietnam, Japan and Indonesia.
No matter where it’s commemorated, common elements are getting together with family and friends to view the luminous moon and enjoying some mooncakes (or rice dumplings in Japan) and pomelos, and children carrying brightly lit lanterns of all shapes and designs.
In celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, Petite Patisserie will have all things bunnies and moons as the theme for its next Décor Bar.
Lantern Festival Décor Bar will take place on Saturday, 10 September at The Patissier’s Kitchen at 18 Ann Siang Rd, #01-01.
Call 6220-5565 or e-mail: infor.as@thepatissier.com to choose your cake flavour (Chocolate Dream, Strawberry Delight and Mango Madness) and reserve a place at our Décor Bar for one of the following sessions:
10 am – 11 am
11.15 am – 12.15 pm
1.30 pm – 2.30 pm
2.45 pm – 3.45 pm
4 pm – 5 pm
Wherever you are this 12 September, I hope you get to enjoy some time with family and friends and all the beauty of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
* There’s a reason why the moon appears bigger and brighter on Mid-Autumn Festival. The 15th day of the eighth month on the Chinese calendar parallels the autumnal equinox of the solar calendar, when the moon is at its fullest and roundest. I knew I wasn’t imagining it!
When I was growing up, my sisters and I weren’t particularly girlie girls – maybe because my mum didn’t really buy into the pink, frills and princess routine for girls. We played with lots of blocks, acted out stories we imagined constantly, ran around trying to rear chickens in our back garden (a venture we soon gave up – the poor chickies never did make it into chickens).
Yet, the first doll (and of course, it had to be a Barbie) I asked for and received in my late primary school years was one of my most prized possessions. I remember taking it to school after the exams were over (in those days, we were allowed to bring a toy or game to school after exams to entertain ourselves while the teachers were away in their office, doing important things like marking exam papers and finishing up report books, I imagine) and my Barbie would play with my friends’ Barbies. Wanting to get Barbie more clothes and fashion accoutrements was a real incentive for me to save my pocket money, and going to the toy store to look at different Barbies, more clothes (and the Barbie dream house, my goodness!) was as close to retail therapy as you could get for a nine- or 10-year-old, I guess.
In preparation for an upcoming Décor Bar promotion, I recently went to a toy store to check out a display of Barbies and related products (houses, convertibles, even vintage, wow!) – it brought back so many memories. It made me smile to recall how happy I could be with something so small and simple. As we grow up and grow older, it seems to take more to make us happy. Why don’t we take as much pleasure in the little things, the same way we would as kids?
That few moments at the toy store catching up with Barbie was simple, pure, child-like pleasure. I think that’s something worth doing more often – catching the small moments of our life, appreciating them, smiling and saying, “Yes, I’m happy. And I’m grateful.”
If you’re a Barbie fan and would like to catch some moments of joy, join us for our Décor Bar on Saturday, 9 July. We’re hosting a My First Barbie Décor Bar.
It happens on Saturday, 9 July at The Patissier’s Kitchen at 18 Ann Siang Rd, #01-01.
Call 6220-5565 or e-mail: infor.as@thepatissier.com to choose your cake flavour and reserve a place at our Décor Bar for one of the following sessions:
10 am – 11 am
11.15 am – 12.15 pm
1.30 pm – 2.30 pm
2.45 pm – 3.45 pm
4 pm – 5 pm
It costs $25 for one cake, all décor ingredients and help from our chefs.
There is a poem I found online that I love. The author is unknown but it expresses so beautifully how so many of us regard our dads that I wanted to share it with you.
Mother is all that is noble and fine,
And all that is right and good.
She richly deserves every sonnet that’s sung
To her glorious motherhood.
And when Mother receives some fresh acclaim
The whole wide world is glad,
But away down deep in every heart
There’s a place that is just for Dad.
We may not shower him with praise
Nor mention his name in song,
And sometimes it seems that we forget
The joy he spreads as he goes along,
Bu tit doesn’t mean that we don’t know
The wonderful role that he has had.
And away down deep in every heart
There’s a place that is just for Dad.
In my family, my mother is the larger than life figure – she’s knows what she wants, thinks she knows best, and makes sure we know it! But, to paraphrase a popular saying, my dad has always been the man behind the successful mother.
Unassuming and quiet, my dad has been the strongest pillar of support any of my siblings and I could have asked for. If it weren’t for his generous encouragement and unflinching sponsorship, The Patissier would never have seen the light of day. Our mother may be the “diva” of the family, but our father is definitely the king!
So, it’s time for fathers to get equal time in the glory game. We’re dedicating this month’s Patite Patisserie Décor Bar to DADS!
Our kitchen at The Patissier’s Ann Siang outlet will be open on Saturday, 18 June for customers who want to decorate a Patite Patisserie cake especially for their fathers. Patite Patisserie frozen, decorate-it-yourself cakes come in three delicious flavours of Chocolate Dream, Strawberry Delight and Mango Madness. Decorate them any way you like – our chefs will be on hand to help you pull off a professional yet totally customized look.
Patite Patisserie’s Décor Bar for Father’s Day takes place on Saturday, 18 June at The Patissier’s Kitchen at 18 Ann Siang Rd, #01-01.

To all our unsung heroes, Happy Father’s Day!
Alright, I promise, that’s the last of the puns on egg.
So you know we held a Décor Bar for Easter on 16 April. So far, we’ve had a Valentine’s Day love fest, a retro theme, and this month (18 June to be precise), we’ll be celebrating Father’s Day at our Décor Bar events.
I have to admit, I’m partial to Easter. I love the pastel colours that come into play when Spring arrives, the divine chocolate eggs… and who could ever resist the cute bunnies and chickies?
Easter is celebrated in many countries throughout the world and each country has its unique traditions as well as Easter goodies. Russians like to eat an Easter bread that is filled with juicy white raisins and that actually tastes more like cake than bread. In some parts of Eastern Europe, the pastry of choice during Easter us babka, a cake that is shaped like a billowy skirt – the name babka after all means little old woman and I guess that’s the first item of clothing that pops to mind when you think of kindly old ladies baking away at an oven! In Italy, you get Easter cakes in the shape of a rabbit, while in other traditionally Christian countries, especially the UK, hot cross buns are very popular – so much so that they are now sold year round instead of just at Easter.
Perhaps one day, a hand-decorated Patite Patisserie cake will become the Easter sweet of choice in Singapore!
Moms, if you’re looking for a special Father’s Day gift for your hubby, come down and join us (with the kids – we’re very child friendly) on Sat, 18 June for our Father’s Day Décor Bar.
