What do you get when you turn a candy bar into a cake?

Some things in life, particularly food, are best at their simplest. An old-fashioned mac and cheese; a classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich; a slurpingly satisfying hot bowl of unadorned fishball soup…

But then, there are times when you crave an explosion of taste; something that overwhelms your taste buds, wows your palate; when you crave something that makes you go, “OMG, died and gone to heaven! But wait, there’s more… here’s another nuance of flavour, a different taste, a new texture.”

Ladies and gentlemen, our new cake, PBNC, is made for one of those times.

Inspired by the world’s most popular candy bar, Snickers, we offer you layer upon layer of sinful goodness. Swoon at your first bite of… a crunchy peanut butter base, almond nougat, 80 per cent cocoa Valrhona chocolate mousse, and finally caramel crème brulee.

But we bet you won’t be able to stop at that first bite.

PBNC is available at both The Patissier outlets from 1st April 2012. Retail price for a 500g cake is $40 + GST and $80 + GST for a 1kg cake.

If, like me, you grew up a couple (ahem, maybe more like 3 or 4) of decades ago in a Singapore that was still verty much traditionally Asian, you’d remember a time when Christmas was not a big deal. Sure, some of us had little plastic trees with a few flastic baubles; maybe exchanged presents with our closer friends; perhaps a nice dinner with family on the Eve.

But in today’s decidedly more cosmopolitan environment, I think you’d be hard put to find anyone who deosn’t succumb every December to the allure of the bright lights and delicious smells of Christmas. Live trees, foam snow, the Orchard Road light up, hams and turkeys the size of which has our Asian eyes and palates all agog, log cakes of all permutations and colours and even shapes (I am still reconciling myself to the idea that a log cake may not be in the shape of a log!)…Christmas in Singapore sure has taken a whole different dimension.

While it may all seem terribly commercialized, and sometimes even crass, I still love it all. I recently attended a very early Christmas gift exchange (for the kids) and potluck(for the adults) for a group of friends I’ve known for a very long time.

With close to 10 families in attendance, it was loud, chaotic and crazy. And absolutely fantastic. Our kids are blessed, there’s no double about that, so to see them still able to get that excited over sharing and exchanging gifts tells me there’s still something very special about the holiday. I believe it is up to us to find these special moments in a holiday that can be overwhelming and even stressful.

As the year draws to a close, some of us tend to get rather reflective, and Christmas is a great time to appreciate the joy and uniqueness each of our family and friends brings into our lives.

No matter how you celebrate Christmas, we at The Patissier, Petite Patisserie, and Smitten…by The Patissier wish you all the love, friendship, peace, and joy of the season. Merry Christmas.

In celebration of the season, Petite Patisserie’s next Decor Bar will be dedicated to Santa and all things Christmas.

Our chefs will be on hand to help you decorate your Petite Patisserie cake, which comes in three delicious flavours – Chocolate Dream, Strawberry Delight and Mango Madness.

All you need is an unabashed love for the portly man in red and white, an unleashed imagination, and we’ll provide everything you need (an undecorated Petite Patisserie cake of your choice, a full spread of ingredients to decorate the cake; and professional bakers on standby to help you).

Petite Patisserie’s Christmas Decor Bar will be held on Saturday, 17 December at The Patissier’s Kitchen at 18 Ann Siang Rd, #01-01.

Call 6220 5565 or email: infor.as@thepatissier.com to choose your cake flavour and reserve a place at our Decor Bar for one of the following sessions:
10am – 11am
11.15am – 12.15pm
1.30pm – 2.30pm
2.45pm – 3.45pm
4pm – 5pm

Advance payment of $25nett (for one cake, decor ingredients and help from our chefs) is required and no cancellations are allowed. Member of The Patissier are entitled to a 10% discount.

We’re excited! Our new counter outlet, Smitten…by The Patissier, specialising in meringue roulades will open on 28 Sep at Takashimaya Dept Store Food Hall.

Drum roll and drawing of curtains please; we’re finally ready to unveil our latest baby. We’re so excited to reveal… Smitten…by The Patissier.

Come Wednesday, 28 September, we will open our very first counter outlet. Located in Takashimaya Department Store Food Hall on B2, the counter will offer something quite unique – a culinary tribute and dedication to just one product! We’re going to offer a range of meringue roulades – one product, but oh the myriad taste sensations; you have to taste it to believe it – featuring our signature meringue sponge (yes, of Passionfruit Meringue fame).

How did we come up with the idea? A random musing by our executive chef, Siang Yee, basically started it all. As some of you know, she created the Passionfruit Meringue (which is now one of our best sellers at The Patissier) but she’s always believed that the texture of the meringue sponge was best suited to be savoured in its intended form, the roll. We only changed it to its current cake form because of requests from our customers for something more traditional for birthdays and other celebrations.

When inspiration strikes Siang Yee, it strikes hard. After weeks of experimenting with flavours and combinations, and achieving delicious success, we just couldn’t let the idea go. A smaller retail space to specialise just in meringue roulades! When the opportunity to take up a counter at Taka came along, eureka!, we took it as a sign.

When it came to naming the outlet, we toyed with several names but in the end, one really stood out for us. Enraptured, absorbed, captivated, mesmerised, consumed… we were definitely smitten! And being able to call our whole rolls Hugs and slices Kisses to tie in with the name just sealed the deal.

This was a very special project for us, and we knew it would appeal most to a similarly special customer segment. As you can see, in designing the counter space, our packaging, and logo, we wanted to reflect the fun-loving, slightly irreverent, even cheeky nature of our target market.

Smitten…by The Patissier has been a real labour of love for us. It’s been hard, but we loved every single minute of planning, experimenting, tasting, designing, creating. We hope you enjoy it as much as we’ve loved bringing it to you.
